Meaning

O Lord rAma!

  • Give me the privilege of being in Your service as a (royal) guard.
  • Give me the privilege of being in Your service as a true (royal) guard who would thrash the six internal enemies – desire, conceit etc., and make them bite dust.
  • Give this tyAgarAja the privilege of being in Your service as a (royal) guard on whose person would shine these –
    • a heavy armour of horripilation,
    • royal badge of being rAma’s devotee, and
    • divine sword called rAma’s name.

Translation: O Parrot (singing) in the cage of OMkAra! O Supreme Lord who has assumed the forms of Trinity – Siva, brahmA and vishNu, and others! To rAvaNa, You are like Lord Siva to yama! O Friend of Lord Siva – One who wears the digit of Moon! O Compassionate Lord! O Protector of those who have sought refuge in You! O Lord who is most delightful to virtuous minded! O Immutable Lord! O Lord who is described as the Excellent One in the vEdas!

Meaning: Having searched my inner recess, I have directly perceived that everything is You alone; (OR) having searched properly in my inner recess, I have perceived that everything is You alone;
I shall not, in my mind, even think of anyone other than You; therefore, please protect me.

Sri Tyagaraja seems to assume the bhava of Vibhishana requesting the Lord to give him refuge.
